Vietnam is located in the tropical monsoon region and is one of the five storm hubs in the Asia-Pacific region. Each year, the country frequently faces various severe natural disasters. Over the past 30 years, the average number of deaths and missing persons due to natural disasters is about 500 people per year; thousands are injured; and economic losses are approximately 1.5% of GDP. Specifically, during the period from 2000 to 2010, the number of deaths due to natural disasters was 5,045, the number of missing persons was 617, and the total economic loss was over 4 billion USD (IMHEN and UNDP, 2015).
Based on the above reality, the Information and Communications Publishing House has collaborated with the Institute for Socio-Economic Development of Rural and Mountainous Areas (CISDOMA) to publish the book “Dissemination and Guidance on Disaster Prevention for the Community.” This book aims to enhance the disaster prevention capacity of the community in general, while also providing basic knowledge and information to guide households and communities in preventing and responding to some common types of natural disasters specific to their local areas.
