The household economy is an important component of Vietnam’s economy. Since the Politburo issued Resolution No. 10/NQ-TW on April 5, 1988, on “Renovating Agricultural Economic Management,” with the aim of liberating productive forces in agriculture and rural areas, transferring land and other means of production to farmers for long-term management and use, the farmers’ households have become autonomous units in agricultural production. This means recognizing the household as a basic economic unit (known as the household economy). Since then, households have been autonomous in business production, having full rights in production management, labor utilization, procurement of technical materials, and cooperation in the production, and consumption of their products.
The book “Guide to Household Economic Planning” was compiled by the Institute for Socio-Economic Development of Rural and Mountainous Areas (CISDOMA) based on the content of the “Handbook for Household Economic Planning” with the support of the Australia for People of Asia and the Pacific (AOP) Fund. The book consists of three main sections:
- Section 1: Introduces some concepts and terms commonly used in the calculation and analysis of household economics. These terms and concepts are simplified to suit the target readers, who are farming households and farmers.
- Section 2: Guides the steps for analyzing and selecting types of household economies. These steps are also designed according to the characteristics of agricultural and rural livelihood types.
- Section 3: Introduces some livelihood models at the household group and cooperative levels.
This book is aimed at users who are residents of rural areas involved in agricultural and forestry production and business. It can also be used by development organizations and community workers as a reference when guiding and supporting communities in applying livelihood solutions and developing household economies.
