Ha Giang – On 26/10/2012, in Quang Binh Commune, the training course Children’s Rights to Birth Registration and related legal documents was co-organized by the Consultative Institute for Socio-Economic Development of Rural and Mountainous Areas (CISDOMA) and Quang Binh Women’s Union.

This was the next activity in the project Capacity building for Quang Binh Women’s Union in legal communication support for ethnic minority women sponsored by Justice Initiatives Facilitation Fund (JIFF/JPP) for CISDOMA.

Participating in the course were Chiefs of Commune Women’s Unions in Quang Binh District, Heads of Women with Law and Life Clubs in 15 communes, and representatives from the Justice Office of Quang Binh Women’s Union.

The course was led by Lawyer Hoang Nguyen Binh, LLM, aiming at helping the participants:

  • Comprehend children’s rights to birth registration and the responsibilities of local authorities, Women’s Unions, and justice officers in promoting timely birth registration for children.
  • Understand legal documents related to birth registration for children and apply this knowledge in encouraging families of newborn babies to make timely birth registration in compliance with current law.

The training course applied human rights-based/participatory methods including group discussion, personal exercises, case study analysis and learning by doing, through which the participants could turn theories into practice and acquire useful experiences.

At the end of the course, the trainees better understood birth registration and saw birth registration as an indispensable right of children. They also grasped the procedures and legal values of regular birth registration, out-dated registration, and registration for abandoned children.

Nguyen Bao Long – Head of Justice Department, stated: “Our sincere thanks go to the course’s trainer and CISDOMA for holding this training in Quang Binh District. We have encountered tremendous difficulties in promoting the benefits of timely birth registration and children’s rights to birth registration in the community. Through this course, we gained useful knowledge in conducting birth registration at local level.”
